Welcome to Memories Scotland. A digital archive for Scotland’s Memory Groups.

Memories Scotland is the latest development of a Scotland-wide project connecting heritage resources with reminiscence activity. In the years following an initial launch as Football Memories in 2009, groups across the country have used our archive of football history to promote reminiscence among people living with dementia and other forms of memory loss. As the impact of the project developed, so has its reach – having expanded to include additional sporting heritage from cricket, rugby, golf, shinty and speedway.

Following a relaunch in November 2021, the archive now includes a rich social history collection thanks to an exciting partnership with Scotland’s libraries. With the addition of local studies material on the themes of Working Life and Social Life, the Memories Scotland archive is set to engage new audiences with this expanded collection of historical images, artefacts, film and audio. The new partnership also involves the creation of library-based Memory Groups, alongside the continued development of the project in sports clubs and other community settings across Scotland. As well as having access to this growing archive, new groups will extend their participation beyond those living with dementia. In the wake of a pandemic which has left many individuals within our communities feeling isolated, Memories Scotland aims to bring people together in reminiscence.

Memory Groups

Reminiscence is known to be a powerful tool for improving health and wellbeing. Our Scotland-wide network of Memory Groups use the Memories Scotland archive to aid reminiscence and prompt conversation with this outcome in mind. In sharing experiences and stories, group participants and facilitators report a range of positive outcomes – which can include anything from connecting with others to renewed self-esteem and increased confidence. This is why in addition to being dementia-friendly, Memory Groups are now inclusive and open to all - providing a forum for participants from all walks of life to come together and make connections.

Memory Groups are based in a wide variety of accessible venues which include sports clubs, libraries, community centres and care homes. For those unable to participate in-person, we plan to provide online options where possible. Memory Groups are organised and delivered by facilitators, which include a large pool of experienced volunteers. We offer training and support to new facilitators, and welcome interest from potential volunteers. For more information on becoming a participant or facilitator, or if your organisation wants to sign up as a partner, please see our page on how to Get Involved.
