The Scotland men’s national team competes in two major qualifying tournaments, the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championships. The latter competition is due to come to Scotland in 2020 as Glasgow has been selected as one of 13 cities from across Europe to stage UEFA Euro 2020 tournament matches. Hampden Park will host three group stage matches and a round of 16 match. The leading teams within the Scottish Premiership along with the Scottish Cup winner compete in UEFA Club competitions. Celtic FC was the most recent club to qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champion’s League in season 2016-17.

Scottish women’s football has enjoyed rapid growth over the last decade with over 8000 players registered to play across 249 clubs. The Scotland women’s national team which competes in two major qualifying tournaments (the FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA Women’s European Championships) has been ranked as high as 19 within world football in recent years and made history in 2016 by qualifying for its first major tournament – UEFA Women’s Euro 2017. At club level, Glasgow City FC became the first Scottish side to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champion’s League in season 2014-15.
